It has been over a week since FRED HATES FASHION RUNWAY and it has actually taken me this long to recover!
The photos are popping up on social media and we have been getting really positive feedback from everyone about our collection which has been really rewarding! I have pulled together my favourite photos from the night from various sources here for everyone to have a bit of a gander!
In other news I am express posting one of the outfits down to Tasmania for Art on Legs Wearable art and art to wear awards which is happening this weekend!
SO Alyce and pulled out all the stops today to get everything cut out and ready to spend the next week sewing at lightening speed! In an epic session that lasted from 10am to 8:30pm we managed to get all the toiles finalised, everything is now cut out and ready to sew and after sitting on the floor for the majority of the afternoon/evening – both Alyce and I are feeling very decrepit!
Concentrating on the task at hand
Alyce smashing it out on the sewing machine
Shorts cut out and ready to sew
A little bit of chocolate to get us through the afternoon!
Roll out the gold carpet! 5mts of gold lame are just as spectacular as you might think – kitteh thought so too!
This morning the sun is shining, the wind is blowing and the tunes are pumping – all of these factors add up to the perfect conditions in which to sit on the floor with my paintbrush in hand and a blank piece of fabric stretched out in front of me…and this is what happened:
Now I’m off to see the Walter Van Beirendonck exhibition: Dream the World Awake at the RMIT Design Hub and catch up with one of my besties…never fear, the knitting is coming with (yes I will be that person on the tram with my knitting taking up the entire seat and my tongue poking from the corner of my mouth in concentration).
So because my body is really in tune with my brain and realised that I have a huge deadline coming up in 2 weeks time – thus requiring my full and undivided attention in order to get everything ship shape and perfected for FRED HATES FASHION (which at the moment feels like it may never happen!) … old mate body decided it should have a little holiday!
BAD TIMING BODY!!
I am knitting a massive cardigan by hand, which I would normally have knitted by machine – but that might have been a bit too sensible! I also have a few of meters of fabric to tie with kumo shibori technique and then hand paint ready to give to my wonderful partner so we can get garments sewn and trimmed and pimping…now this would have – in an ideal world – be completed by now but reality is, when your lungs are packing in and your head feels like it is going to explode, cuddles on the couch with kitteh surrounded by a sea of out of control yarn and endless TV series playing in the background are pretty much all this little munchkin could manage!!
I did drag myself into the kitchen to open a can of hot chilli beans, pour it over some chips with my first ever batch of cheese sauce and some avocado for chilli cheese fries madness – IT WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE THE LAST TIME I MAKE THOSE BABIES (although I’m pretty sure my hips would prefer I shouted otherwise!!)
So now I have dosed up on cold tablets, swigged on my bottle of olive leaf extract and smashed down some garlic and horseradish – my voice is back, I am back at work and the little illness-shaped-hiccup my body tried to throw me off course with has made me even more determined to get our runway pieces looking CAPITAL ‘H’ – Hot!!!
Today is Frida’s Birthday, she has always been a hero of mine and yes, during my high school years I used to pin my hair up and wear floor length skirts in vibrant colours – probably didn’t carry it off as well as she did, especially not when wandering the streets of Hobart, Tasmania – it is a far cry from Coyoacan, Mexico City.
Needless to say, I went to both her ‘Blue House’ in Coyoacan and the house she shared with Diego Rivera – joined by a bridge when I lived in Mexico – and was inspired to smoke a cigar atop the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan after watching the movie.
Frida also inspired the pseudonym of a great friend of my family – so I used to receive letters/birthday cards from Frida Kahlo when I was younger!
Soooo…I probably should stop now because it is starting to get a little bit creepy the extent of my passion for Frida…anyway…Happy Birthday Frida (now it is not such a secret love that I have for you!) Xx
Here is a wee little interview of Alyce and I promoting out collection..we are so very excited to have this opportunity to share our passion for fashion and textiles with the world!
Because neither of us are in a position to sell to buyers at the moment (we are both still studying/I will be studying overseas) we have not had to design to the restraints of commercial viability – this means that all the textiles involved in the collection have been hand manipulated using traditional Japanese SHIBORI techniques and have focused on the handmade, nostalgia, vibrant colours and designs that we would like to wear ourselves – it is essentially an exercise in flexing our little egos…
A long standing friend of mine, the gorgeous Alyce Emslie or AR Emslie designs – who harks from way back in my Junior Bakery Sales Assistant days – has graciously taken on the challenge of putting together a fashion collection to show on the runway at FRED HATES FASHION later this month…
We have a LOT of knitting, stitching, tassel making, painting, shibori manipulating, printing, pasting, plastic wrapping – not to mention laughing and crying – to do before August 30th when the show is happening!
We would love to see you there – follow the website above to buy tix and check out the other amazing designers that will showcase their wares on the night!
